FPS Tier List
FPS games split into S/A/B tiers by scenario — competitive, battle royale, and co-op/tactical — with recent Steam Charts monthly concurrency as a reference and standalone clients like Valorant called out separately.

How We Ranked Them
Data cutoff: August 5, 2026. Games are graded S/A/B by scenario: competitive, battle royale, co-op/tactical, and evergreen classics. Steam player numbers come from Steam Charts recent monthly concurrency; games like Valorant run through standalone clients and don't appear in Steam's concurrency tables, so they're ranked separately by category and typical experience. Sources are in the table below.
| Source | Snapshot / Reporting Window | What It Measures | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steam Charts Top | Public pages around Aug 2026 (concurrency updates in real time) | Steam's current / recent monthly peak concurrency | Covers Steam only; CS2, PUBG, Apex, Delta Force and others can be compared directly |
| Official Steam Charts | Same period | Bestseller and top-played lists | Cross-checked against third-party charts for popularity; not used as the sole basis for tiers |
| Riot / publisher clients | No unified public concurrency leaderboard | — | Valorant and some console exclusives don't show up in Steam tables; called out separately in the article |
Competitive (Gunplay & Ranked)
Weighs aim ceiling, match pacing, and whether the ranked ecosystem still sustains regular play.
| Tier | Game | Basis | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| S | Counter-Strike 2 | Long-term top of Steam Charts overall (public pages around Aug 2026 routinely show several hundred thousand concurrent) | The default competitive benchmark; update and anti-cheat controversies are assessed separately |
| S | Valorant | Standalone client; pro and ranked ecosystem still intact | Not in Steam's concurrency tables; ability-plus-gunplay in short matches, a different muscle memory from CS |
| A | Rainbow Six Siege | Still stable concurrency on Steam Charts (tens of thousands on the same pages) | Heavy on destruction and utility mind games; steep learning curve for mechanics and patch meta |
| A | Overwatch 2 | Still meaningful player numbers on Steam / Battle.net | Hero shooter; more about team composition and coordination than pure aim |
| B | Team Fortress 2 | Evergreen concurrency still on Steam Charts | Classic community-server game; calling it a modern mainstream ranked title is a separate discussion |
Battle Royale
Weighs early-game drop density, circle pacing, and whether the battle pass keeps players invested.
| Tier | Game | Basis | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| S | PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS | Near the top of Steam Charts overall (often alongside CS2 and hot new releases) | Realistic gunplay and circle pacing; matchmaking quality varies by region and server |
| A | Apex Legends | Steam Charts concurrency regularly lands in the top ten | Movement and ability-based shooting; seasonal content drives player returns |
| A | Delta Force | Visible concurrency on Steam Charts around recent months (typically tens of thousands on the same pages) | Multiple modes; doesn't fully overlap with classic battle royale gameplay |
| B | Call of Duty's battle royale mode (Warzone) | Mostly lives in the Battle.net / Game Pass ecosystem | Steam concurrency only tells part of the story; best for players already in the COD family |
Co-op, Tactical & Narrative
Weighs level design, team coordination, and whether replay value still holds up.
| Tier | Game | Basis | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| S | Left 4 Dead 2 / co-op horde shooters of its kind | Long-running community and Steam Workshop content | Consistently fun; new content mostly comes from mods |
| A | Helldivers 2 and similar co-op shooters | Still generating discussion and returning players after launch (per current Steam / media momentum) | Depends on teammates and event cadence; the solo experience is another matter |
| A | Tactical shooters (Ready or Not, etc.) | Genre reputation and long sales tail | Simulation-leaning; a different need from competitive ranked |
| B | Campaign-focused AAA shooters (mostly single-player) | Story and levels are a one-time experience | Concurrency drops after completion; you're buying a campaign, not a ranked ladder |
How to Choose
Want ranked gunplay? Pick CS2 or Valorant and go deep on one. Want the thrill of a hot drop? Go PUBG or Apex. Want to clear missions with friends? Co-op shooters beat grinding ranked. On console or console-plus-PC cross-play, confirm which side your friends are on before you download.
