Indie Game Rankings
Indie games tiered by scenario — one playthrough, New Game+ / roguelike, sandbox building, and local co-op — with recent Steam Charts concurrents and the Steam Deck Top Played list as reference.

How This List Is Built
Data current as of August 6, 2026. Games are graded S/A/B by scenario: "Worth One Playthrough," "New Game+ / Roguelike," "Building & Sandbox," and "Local Co-op." Concurrent counts use the recent public pages on Steam Charts; for portable play, we also check Steam Deck Top Played. Sales and media awards are background context only — they don't set a tier by themselves.
| Source | Snapshot / Reporting Period | What It Actually Measures | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steam Charts | Public pages around Aug 5–6, 2026 | Current / 24-hour peak / all-time peak concurrents | Steam only; use it for relative size and long tail, not as a "fun score" |
| SteamDB Indie Tag Chart | Same period | Concurrent ranking of apps tagged Indie | Tags are self-reported; some AAA titles appear too; use for cross-checking |
| Steam Deck Top Played | Official Charts public page | Playtime ranking on Deck | Handheld scenario only; won't align with desktop concurrents |
Worth One Playthrough
Rated on content density, how clear the goals are, and whether you'll want to immediately start a second run after finishing.
| Tier | Game | Reasoning | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| S | Outer Wilds | Long-stable reputation for exploration and puzzle design; also the cover game in the "Indie Game Rankings" template | Spoiler-sensitive; best played in one immersive sweep, not as an idle grind |
| S | Hades | Still draws thousands of concurrents on Steam Charts recently (around the 4k–5k level as of Aug 2026); benchmark narrative roguelike | Strong for both the first run and repeat runs; the sequel is evaluated separately |
| A | Celeste | Roughly two thousand concurrents on Steam Charts recently; rock-solid reputation for platforming and level design | Not long; the challenge is execution and patience |
| A | Hollow Knight | Roughly 8k–10k concurrents on Steam Charts recently; highly finished map and combat | Difficulty spikes hard late; check the store page for sequel status |
| A | Subnautica | Included in the template; complete exploration and resource loop | Skip if you can't handle deep water; the sequel is a separate experience |
| B | Katana ZERO | Included in the template; short levels, ruthless pacing | Small package; you're buying the feel and presentation |
New Game+ & Roguelikes
Rated on per-run variety, progression curve, and whether they still feed you during idle or short sessions.
| Tier | Game | Reasoning | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| S | The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth | Roughly 110k 24-hour peak on Steam Charts around Aug 2026; about 94k average players in July (way up from June) | Unusually hot lately, likely tied to a version/content update; veterans and newcomers have very different experiences |
| S | Slay the Spire | Roughly 8k–11k concurrents recently on Steam Charts; the deckbuilder reference point | Sequel news: check the store and community; the original is still easy to pick up |
| A | Balatro | Roughly 7.5k–9k concurrents recently on Steam Charts; poker-style deckbuilding | Great for short sessions; the depth is in understanding the numbers |
| A | Dead Cells | Roughly 3k concurrents recently on Steam Charts; tight action-roguelike pacing | Demands more mechanical skill than card-based games |
| B | Vampire Survivors | Roughly 3k concurrents recently on Steam Charts; the auto-shooter archetype | Instant satisfaction; may feel thin if you want narrative heft |
Building, Sandbox & Survival
Rated on system depth, how easy it is to get a group together, and whether you'll actually come back long-term.
| Tier | Game | Reasoning | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| S | Stardew Valley | About 67k average players on Steam Charts recently, with a 24-hour peak around 100k; the evergreen farming sim | Slow pace; built for long-term casual tending |
| S | Terraria | Roughly 30k concurrents recently on Steam Charts, with a 24-hour peak around 38k | Building + combat; an even thicker mod scene |
| A | Don't Starve Together | Roughly 33k concurrents recently, with a 24-hour peak around 55k on Steam Charts | Co-op survival; the solo experience is another story |
| A | No Man's Sky | Roughly 8k concurrents recently on Steam Charts; years of major updates keep pulling players back | Scale and team size are no longer "tiny indie studio"; whether it counts as indie is up to your definition |
| B | Guacamelee! 2 | Included in the template; a luchador-style Metroidvania platformer | Built around levels and combos; sandbox depth is average |
Local Co-op & Party
Rated on how fast you can get started, how loud it gets, and whether you still want to fire up game three.
| Tier | Game | Reasoning | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| S | Duck Game | Included in the template; unmistakable local shooting-party feel | Fun scales with player count; solo practice is pointless |
| A | Comparable local brawlers / party indies | This category shows up constantly under Steam's local co-op tag and party-game recommendations | Specific picks shift a lot with platform and discounts; drag your own into the template |
| B | Skill-heavy multiplayer platformers | The skill gap is what produces the laughs | Newer players get frustrated; the pace drags with too few people |
How to Choose
Want one complete story: Outer Wilds, Hades, Celeste, Hollow Knight. Want endless runs: Isaac, Spire, Balatro. Want long-term building: Stardew, Terraria. Want to turn the living room into chaos for a night: Duck Game and similar local party games. On handheld, start with the indies actually being played on Steam Deck Top Played, then cross-reference these tables.
Remixing the Tier List in the Template
That's the editorial opinion. The "Indie Game Rankings" template (ID 354, roughly 158 entries) lets you drag and drop your own list.
