How to rank them

The main table in this article uses DistroWatch's 12-month average daily page hits (HPD) — per the site's own description, the numbers reflect how often each distribution's page is viewed, which serves as a proxy for visitor interest; global install counts are better assessed through other samples. For cross-reference, we also include StatCounter's desktop market share and the Linux share from the Steam Hardware Survey, with breakdowns by use case.

How Big Is Desktop Linux?

StatCounter global desktop data for July 2026: Windows 71.18%, OS X 12.21%, macOS 7.61%, Linux 7.53%, Chrome OS 1.47%. Steam's Linux share for the same month was about 4.01% (up 0.32% month-over-month). The two sample populations differ, so the numbers don't need to align perfectly; what's clear is that desktop Linux has become far more visible in both web traffic and gaming audiences than it was a few years ago.

Over the past 12 months, the top ten on HPD split roughly into three groups: CachyOS leads on its own; Mint, MX, Debian, Pop!_OS, and Zorin lean toward "ready to use as a daily desktop"; EndeavourOS, Fedora, Ubuntu, and Manjaro cover the three common upgrade cadences of Arch / Red Hat upstream / Canonical.

Package management and update cadence

When picking a distro, you often hit the package manager first. Within the same family, derivatives usually share or stay compatible with upstream repositories.

Common distributions on Steam

In the July 2026 Steam Hardware Survey, Linux accounted for about 4.01% overall. The following are the main Linux / SteamOS entries listed on the survey page (as a percentage of all platforms, not Linux's internal share).

CachyOS shows up both at the top of DistroWatch and among the leading Linux gaming distros on Steam, so it gets extra visibility from both site visitors and players with Steam running. SteamOS remains the single largest Linux entry by share, driven mainly by the Deck and Holo.

Choose by use case rather than chasing HPD rankings. Within the same family, then pick a desktop environment (GNOME / KDE / Cinnamon, etc.).
