2026 Screen Recorders Tier List

If you record product demos or tutorials, you probably want the apps that zoom with the cursor and spit out a finished clip. On 7 September 2026 we used Recorder Select’s public table—twelve apps, each with a composite score. ScreenCam (434.1) and ScreenKite (409.7) sat at the top, so they go in S.

How the bands break: 400 and up is S, 300–399 A, 249–299 B, 214–248 C, 213 and below D. Inside a band, higher score first.

ScreenCam is the only one of the twelve on the Mac App Store. Native, 35.7MB, zoom ticked 9/9. ScreenKite is native macOS too, and the only 3/3 in the AI group. The site says recording and editing are free, with a watermarked export; Pro is a $79.99 buyout for three Macs, not a monthly plan.

The three A-tier apps just clear 300. SmoothCapture and Screen Sage Pro are native macOS. Cap is Tauri, runs on Windows / macOS / Linux, and the code is open. cap.so lists a free forever tier, a $29/year desktop license, and Cap Pro at $8.16 per user per month. Screen Sage Pro’s own buyout prices are $59 / $99 / $299; the comparison table’s price cell says From $299.

In B, Matte also ticks zoom 9/9 and leans on simulator and device capture; the site lists $10/month or $149. Screenflare is 13.6MB, the smallest install here. Screen Studio is the older name people still mean when they say auto-zoom demos: Electron, 653MB, From $29/month ($9/month if you pay yearly). On that day’s default weights it lands at 249.7.

C is BetterShot, Kapture and OpenScreen. Recorder Select wrote next to BetterShot: “Suspected to be based on screendrop without attribution.” D is Screendrop alone, 211.9, GitHub 1.9k stars.

OS, install size, price

Size, stack, open-source flag and list price come from the same Recorder Select table. OS and paid tiers were checked on the vendor sites.

How we ranked this

On 7 September 2026 we used the Recorder Select page as it stood that day. Each app has a composite score (features, size, platforms, and the site’s default weights). We split those scores into S ≥400, A 300–399, B 249–299, C 214–248, D ≤213. A cell like zoom 9/9 is how many feature boxes they ticked, not a frame-rate test we ran.

A few vendor pages we checked

Cap’s site shows 21.7k GitHub stars, builds for three operating systems, and self-hosting. SmoothCapture wants macOS 15.2 or later on Apple Silicon. Kapture records and edits for free; free export is 1080p/30fps with a corner mark; Pro is $10/month or $99 once. OpenScreen is Electron on Windows / macOS / Linux. Screendrop’s repo asks for macOS 26.4 or later.
