How We Ranked Them

Methodology 2026-08-06Stardew Valley has no official popularity vote for its characters, so this piece lays out the community data we could verify: TheGamer's aggregated 763-vote marriage popularity poll, the first-marriage share from the r/StardewValley spouse survey, cross-checked against two editor-driven romance rankings. Non-marriageable villagers get their own section covering the names the community brings up most. The February 2026 tenth-anniversary stream announced that 1.7 will add Clint and Sandy as marriage candidates, but since the official patch isn't out yet, they stay off the main list.

Current marriage candidate list

The canon remains 6 men and 6 women. Men: Alex, Elliott, Harvey, Sam, Sebastian, Shane. Women: Abigail, Emily, Haley, Leah, Maru, Penny. You can also cohabitate with Krobus, though that isn't a wedding. Clint and Sandy will be added once the 1.7 update goes live.

This is currently the best set of vote breakdowns to cite. Sebastian leads with 15%; Penny follows at 12%; Abigail and Shane each get 11%; Haley and Leah each get 10%; Harvey gets 8%. Elliott, Alex, Maru, Emily, and Sam each fall under 6%, and are grouped together as "Others" in the article.

With 763 votes, this is a small sample—treat it as a snapshot of English-speaking community tastes, not a global official tally.

Reddit First-Spouse Survey

In a Spouse Survey post on r/StardewValley, the top three first spouses were Sebastian at 18.8%, Abigail at 14.4%, and Leah tied with Shane at around 10%. As with TheGamer, Sebastian and Abigail hold the top tier; Penny ranked higher on TheGamer, but in this Reddit thread she didn't crack the top three—differences in sample size and question phrasing make that gap expected.

Comparing Two Editorial Rankings

These personal rankings reflect the tastes of story-focused fans and aren’t pooled with the vote totals. Rice Digital puts Penny first, Shane second, and Harvey third; Punished Backlog, meanwhile, ranks Shane, Elliott, and Sebastian in the top three, with Harvey dead last. The same cast can land a full tier apart depending on who’s judging.

Confirmed during the February 2026 tenth-anniversary livestream: Update 1.7 will make blacksmith Clint and desert oasis shopkeeper Sandy marriageable candidates. No release date yet, and it will likely still hit PC first, consoles later.
